Peace Music Nature

Peace Through Music & Nature

Dean Evenson has loved nature from his early days as a bird watcher, an Eagle Scout and camping with his family. His peace music began with flute at 10 years old, so as he grew up, the idea of combining nature and music together became a natural course of his life path. In 1979, Dean was one of the first musicians to combine the sounds of nature with his peaceful music and in the process, he helped birth a whole new genre of relaxation and meditation music.

Another influence on his work has been his contact with Native American wisdom that teaches about nature perceiving the Earth as a living being which provides for our physical sustenance. The indigenous people call her Mother Earth and it is this concept that has caught the attention of Dean and Dudley who have dedicated their lives to bringing awareness to the importance of respecting nature. They see nature, not just as a resource for human development, but as having value in itself, for itself. Humans benefit greatly from healthy, natural ecosystems. When nature is out of balance, human populations are affected, not just the animals and plants. It is in all our best interests to do what we can to protect nature and give back to the Earth.

We hope you enjoy this short video of Dean Evenson discussing his philosophy about nature, music and peace.

“When we can relax ourselves into nature and experience the beauty and complexity of the natural world around us, we began to see how we do fit into this amazing system. We realize our responsibility to care for the life that is around us, knowing that life gives back multifold to an energy that’s given into it. You put a seed in the ground, add water and light, and that one little seed grows into a big plant. Some of the plants even have fruits and vegetables that are shareable as food. The natural world is a support system for all life and especially the human population so that we can evolve into greater things. It gives us immense pleasure to be part this beautiful, living system”
~ Dean Evenson

To these ideas of music and nature, Dean adds the concept of peace – both inner and outer peace. For almost four decades, people have been using Dean’s music to support their meditation and healing process. The gentle tones of flute, joined with nature sounds, create a perfect environment of Peace Through Music. When a person experiences inner peace, they will be a peaceful influence on the world around them. Everyone benefits from one individual living in harmony with themselves and their environment.

9/11 Fourteen years after. What have we learned?

911 blue lights Twin TowersI took this picture of the Twin Towers blue tribute lights several years ago while riding along New York’s West Side Highway. The two light beams were being projected to honor those who died in that tragic event. I remember noticing all the moths flying in the light and at the time feeling they represented all the lost souls who perished on that sad September day. My camera was still pointing out the window when we started through the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel and it was almost confiscated by a guard, as if I might be using it to plan another attack.

I wanted to write about 911 but also wanted to steer clear of political commentary. There has been enough of that. What I hope to call attention to is what we have or have not learned since then and how can we prevent a continuation of the violence and wars that have followed. The current state of affairs in the Middle East is overwhelming and to read the news, it doesn’t seem like we are making any progress toward peace in the region. But maybe we are and we just don’t hear about it. True peace takes time and commitment and if we look behind the news media, there are many examples of people trying to come together with a true intention of peace. That is what I would like to focus on.

We each need to act in our own realm, relating to the people we interact with. With that intention of peace building, a few years ago my husband, Dean Evenson, and I decided to put together an album that would bring together musicians representing the Jewish, Christian and Muslim faiths. These are the groups in conflict but when you look deeply enough, you realize they are all descended from the same source – grandfather Abraham. So in reality, the conflict is about cousins not getting along. We called the album – Healing the Holy Land: A Musical Journey of Faith and you can imagine why.

Healing the Holy LandI remember after 911 realizing I knew very little about the Muslim faith and Dean and I made an effort to study and learn more through books and videos and talking to people. In the process we realized we had our own prejudices that needed to be addressed because they were based on misinformation. So if I could suggest one thing people could do, it would be to learn about each other, get to know people who are different from you and your family. Try to understand other faiths and be tolerant. We are fortunate to live in a country where supposedly we have freedom of religion, but if we continue to criticize those who believe differently from us, we are not practicing what we preach.

Here’s an excerpt from a review from Natural Awakenings of Healing the Holy Land: A Musical Journey of Faith:

What do an Iraqi woman from Baghdad, a Jewish peace advocate living in Jerusalem, a Palestinian oud player, an Iranian singer, a Lebanese Christian and a Turkish nez player all have in common? They all appear on Soundings of the Planet’s release, Healing the Holy Land. This stunning collection of songs and sacred chants from the Middle East represents a profound union of Jewish, Christian and Muslim music in a spirit of harmony and peace.

Dean and Dudley Evenson, following a long-held dream, have brought together musicians from the three Abrahamic faiths or ‘People of the Book’, as they are known. Because they are three groups that are often in conflict, what better way to bridge the chasm than with an album that honors and features each of their unique spiritual contributions? This album is a continuation of the Evensons’ mission of building cultural bridges of Peace Through Music, which they have pursued since founding their label, Soundings of the Planet, in 1979…Click to learn more about Healing the Holy Land.

A New Day, A New Year, A New You

I let go of the old and open myself to the new

This is the first in our series of 52 weekly meditations and a good place to start after the busy holidays.

I sit quietly and center myself, breathing deeply and fully. I feel myself firmly connected to the earth as I let the spirit flow through me. I let go of busyness and of anything that may be overwhelming me. I open myself to the new, to new possibilities, to a new day, and to the fresh new cells being constantly created in my body with every breath I take. I feel the refreshing inspiration of new opportunities coming my way. I welcome this new and wonderful time in my life and see it filled with goodness, creativity and peace. I let go of the old and allow the new to come gently into my life.

Often, we tend to cling to old patterns and habits that may be holding us back. It is these attachments that can keep us from living fully. In this centering affirmation, we allow ourselves to open up to the many blessings that exist within the vast sea of infinite possibilities surrounding us. When so-called negative experiences present themselves, we frequently tighten up and form an armor of resistance around us, thereby closing ourselves off from the magic inherent in the unknown. By always being open to new possibilities, we allow the Universe to harness all its forces to help us in the best ways possible. This affirmation is a wonderful way to begin our year of weekly wisdom meditations.

We hope you will take advantage of the 52 Weekly Affirmations and go through your year focusing on these universal principles.  They are guaranteed to make your life happier, healthier, more prosperous and even improve your relationships.  Below are the several different formats available to suit your needs.  And coming soon is an iPhone App.  We will let you know when it’s ready.  But no need to wait as you can begin now with the CD, DVD, download or DailyOM online course.

Thích Nhất Hạnh: A Message of Peace in the Midst of War

In 1972, Thích Nhất Hạnh, was a young Vietnamese Zen Buddhist monk and outspoken critic of the conflict raging in his homeland.  During the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment in Stockholm, Sweden he spoke candidly about the war in Vietnam and the need for peace.  He called for people to re-examine their lives and take responsibility for the causes of war.  This interview was recorded in half-inch, black and white video on a Sony Portapack and appears on the DVD ‘2 U.N. Earth Summits: 1972 & 1992’ by Dean Evenson.

Transcription:
“Pressure should be made in order to stop the flow of weapons in Vietnam either by the United States and other countries, whether capitalist or socialist.  But that can be done only when there is already a commitment by the United States to withdraw in a certain period of time and the cessation of the killing.  I’m not talking about North Vietnam or South Vietnam, Hanoi or Saigon.  I am talking about the people in Vietnam whom I know, those people who are dying every day, who are suffering every day.  I am talking for their sake.

“And if you want to ask me the question of what they want, the most is that you stop the bombing, you stop the killing and then if we are alive we will pursue our struggle for other things like human dignity, freedom, independence and so on.  But if you think that you have to go on fighting and dying, then you are wrong.  I don’t think it is only the American government that is responsible for the war.

“Most of you know that the political-economic system there has been causing things like war in Vietnam.  That is why not doing anything about the system and only demand the government to do everything, that is not enough.  And I’m afraid that even if you get another new president, he may be doing the same thing as the present one.

“That is why for the people to re-examine their lives, themselves, to know whether they are participating in the strengthening of the present system in the United States is a very crucial point.  If you continue to support that system, continue to consume, continue to live that way, and then you cannot say that you are not responsible, that you are upholding the government in doing things in Vietnam.”

Thích Nhất Hạnh is the founder of Plum Village Monastery in the Dordogne region in southern France.  On November 11, 2014, he experienced a severe brain hemorrhage and was brought to hospital. There are signs that a full recovery may be possible.  We are praying for his perfect health.

A Primordial Clear Light Mind

A primordial clear light mind
Is something that we all have within us.
It is not something external to us.
It is on this basis that we can attain enlightenment
When we can see, straightforwardly and non-conceptually,
the nature of our clear light mind
and remain totally absorbed on this nature
without ever regressing from it we have become a Buddha
– The Gelug/Lagyu tradition of Mahamudra

Buddha gardenWhat is this Pure Light Mind that the scripture above speaks of?  Is this something attainable by us mortals or only available to the realm of the Buddha and the Christ?  Modern scientists recognize that our DNA emits light in the form of photons. So even on the physical level, it is understood that we are made up of light.  Fortunately, many people across the ages have been able to access this aspect of their divine mind though their steadfast practice of meditation.  So, although it may take some time and of course personal discipline, there are tools that can help you in your own quest.  The goal of our meditation should be to move us closer to seeing clearly the nature of our mind which is ultimately pure light. Through meditation, we can hope to remove the impediments to this light by letting go of that which causes our suffering – clouds of worry, fear, anger, hatred, envy, craving and self-doubt.  As we let go of these negative emotions, we make way for a more compassionate, joyful and expansive state of being.  Through a regular meditation practice, we can expect to reach a state of inner peace and move that much closer to the realization our divine self.

Do you have trouble clearing your mind of worrisome or busy thoughts?  Fortunately music has been found to help the process.  Here are some of Soundings of the Planet’s meditation albums.
