Sound Healing Pioneers release Dream Space

Dudley Evenson graduated from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville so when the Tennessee franchise of Natural Awakenings Magazine contacted her about doing an article on Dream Space, she let them know. They included a whole section about the Evensons’ early life, Dudley traveling around the world, Dean and Dudley meeting in New York, living in a school bus, and their early video days.

Excerpt from the article: In 1965, Dudley Dickinson graduated from UT–Knoxville with a degree in art history and a minor in French. She moved to New York City to work for Pan Am, traveled around the world, lived in Japan for a while, and then returned to New York, where in 1968 she met her across-the-hall neighbor in the East Village, Dean Evenson. That’s when her journey really began.

Dickinson and Evenson didn’t just share an apartment hallway; they shared a love and talent for music and media. Soon they were married—and artistic and business partners. Evenson, a Staten Island native had moved to Manhattan’s East Village after receiving a Masters Degree in Molecular Biology to switch his focus and explore his artistic interests. He got a job as a recording engineer at Regent Sound Studios, where he worked on albums by Eric Clapton, Les McCann, Mose Allison and Roberta Flack.

During the 1970s, Dean and Dudley lived in a half sized school bus and traveled the country documenting the emerging culture with a portable video camera. All along the way, they were making music: he played flute and she played harp. By 1979, the husband-and-wife team decided to blend their peaceful music with the sounds of nature and start their own record label, Soundings of the Planet. “We wanted to carry the message of the earth through our music into urban areas, where decisions about the planet were being made,” Dudley Evenson says. “This inspiration came to us directly from our contacts with Native American elders and medicine people. We were also motivated to create a more peaceful and meditative form of music that would support yoga and massage and our evolving spiritual path.”

Together, they have produced more than 75 albums, working with a wide variety of musical artists. Soundings’ latest release is Dean Evenson’s Dream Space, which like many of his other albums supporting his mission of “Peace through Music,” has proven especially popular with massage therapists, body workers, yoga teachers and others whose mission it is to promote relaxation.
Why Spirit Matters

Living in Spirit provides a rudder which guides us in seas both smooth and stormy. Spirit is the one thing which is always there for us, regardless of the state of all the variables in our lives. A spiritual practice helps us awaken to who we really are. It moves us in the direction of awareness, of trust in the process of life, and our own intuitive knowing. A spiritual practice gives us a compass by which to begin navigating our lives anew. It brings us into the present, where healing occurs and where joy perennially resides. A spiritual practice puts us on a course which generates compassion, peace, love, and joy – building self esteem and bringing many blessings to ourselves and to all beings.

Putting Spirit first sets the table for the rest of your life and puts you in a favorable position to undergo your life journey. It increases your connection with other people and the environment around and within you. It helps you appreciate what you have in life and to have compassion for what others are going through in their lives. Recognizing that Spirit is primary will teach you to see all your assets, challenges, and hopes – as well as your issues, tendencies, and desires – in a light which allows you to accept them and work with them, rather than be controlled by them. This leads to harmonious balance and a confident calmness in life, bringing joy and peace to yourself and all who you know and share your life with.

As we cultivate harmony through living in Spirit we become in tune with ourselves and generate peace in our lives. This gives us momentum, energy, and confidence on our path – a spiritual gyroscope which works to maintain balance through the many changes, twists, and turns of living. We can now accept and even embrace all the events of life which formerly were viewed as negative or disastrous and cease judging ourselves and others so intensely. We begin to see there is a harmonious design to our life and that everything happens for a reason. Challenges and lessons still appear, but now we are working with the flow of energy – not against it. We get out of our own way, enabling ourselves to accept unpredictability and change. We are progressively transforming ourselves – our minds, our emotions, even our physical bodies – to operate at higher levels. Through this spiritual alchemy, we become peaceful and we learn how to live. Joy is now with us on our path of discovery – a path which becomes no less than the epic journey of our heart.

Excerpt from INQUIRE WITHIN: A Guide to Living in Spirit by James K. Papp

Soundings Next Generation!

We always wonder what we can leave as a legacy to those who come after us. Dean and Dudley’s 18 year old grand daughter, Cybele Olsen, is now getting involved in sharing Soundings of the Planet’s music and is helping them at shows. She’s been around the scene since birth so it has been fun to get her more involved in the business. Cybele is a natural of course and although she probably won’t be pursuing music as a career, she does have art and video production in her portfolio. The high school she graduated from had one of the best video production programs in the country so she is excited to get her hands on the videos that Dean and Dudley have been making since 1970 when they first bought a Sony half-inch black and white portapack (portable video camera). Now everyone takes for granted making videos from their iPhones or small digital cameras, but back then, portable video was a rarity and a whole movement started around that time with people who were discovering the medium as an art form and a tool for social change. Check out Radical Software, the magazine they helped edit to learn more about those innovative times.

This year has been a time of archiving videos from the past and getting a sense of what exists in the hundreds of hours of videos in various formats that have been stored in the studio attic and the Evensons’ barn all these years. The videos are in no fewer than ten different formats and span over four decades of Soundings of the Planet music and the Evensons’ travels and family lives. A lot of the recent ones are videos of nature that Dean is passionate about documenting. Some of these have already been made into DVDs (Eagle River, Meditation Moods, A Year of Guided Meditations). As for documentaries, the Evensons recently edited ‘2 U.N. Earth Summits: 1972 & 1992‘ covering those two historic United Nations conferences in Stockholm and Rio. There are lots more edits to come and you can look forward to seeing Dean and Dudley’s ‘Decade of Intentional Poverty’ when they lived in a half-sized school bus during the 1970s, their interactions with Native American elders and medicine men or when the traveled to Tibet and later videotaped the Dalai Lama in India, or many of their musical collaborations with outstanding musicians from around the world. Stay tuned as Soundings of the Planet moves beyond music into the world of video. Don’t worry, the music will continue to pour forth, but the videos will be an added dimension! Great discounts on all Soundings of the Planet music & DVDs.

Peace is a state of mind

Peace is more than just the absence of war or violence, peace is a state of mind, a way of being, a path of action. Peace is how you feel inside and how you act on the outside. Your inner state of peace affects your own health and well-being. Your outer actions of peace affect the health of your family and your community. Peace is very powerful. Peace is our natural state. Why then so often do we find ourselves anxious, nervous, worried, and uncomfortable? Sometimes events occur in life that cannot be planned for. Personal or global tragedy may bring forth reactions of pain and confusion. In such cases, we need to focus our efforts toward peace all the more strongly.

Usually our lives are fairly comfortable though so where does the dis-comfort come from? More often than not, it comes from worrisome thoughts about ‘what might happen’ or ‘could happen’ or ‘what already happened’ and we are not living in the present moment. A fast-paced deadline oriented lifestyle can also take its toll and attack our mental and bodily systems. Dis-harmony with people around us causes our state of inner peace to suffer and dis-ease is sometimes the result. To counteract the tendencies that sabotage our health, we need to find ways to clear our minds and restore our spirit. Practicing some form of meditation can benefit us on many levels and playing relaxing music can help to focus the mind away from the distractions of our lives. Finding a place to practice on a regular basis is important. A peaceful sanctuary can help bring balance and harmony to our lives.
Creating a Personal Sanctuary for Spiritual Rejuvenation Benefits You and Your World

As the world becomes more intense, we realize the profound need people have for tools that can counteract the bad news and destructive tendencies assaulting us and our families on a daily basis. One of the options we have to bring more peace into our lives is to create a personal sanctuary where we can withdraw from the world for a bit and restore our equilibrium. Taking time from your busy life for rest and rejuvenation can be of great benefit for personal health as well as for the health of family and community.

That calm space you need may not even be a physical place so much as a psychological space – an environment of peace – where you naturally take a deep breath, let out a long sigh, and release the worries and cares of your day. Relaxing music can help create that ambiance of peace that allows you to ‘simply be’. In a musical sanctuary, you can recharge your overworked batteries and give yourself permission to let go of negative emotions that might be troubling you such as worry, anger, fear, grief, judgment and replace them with positive, life-giving energies of appreciation, security, hope and compassion. Music comes in a small package but can fill your whole home with the blessing of peace.

By allowing your soul and spirit the refuge of peace, you become much stronger and are able to deal with the stresses of life that inevitably come. From your calm center, you can to reach out and have a positive effect on the harmony of all your relationships, including your family, your workplace, your community, your world.

You can also consider creating sacred space on the physical level where you can devote yourself to inner healing work. This can be anything from a room set aside for meditation to a small corner in your bedroom or living room or a spot somewhere in nature. This is your special place where you can sit quietly, free from distractions and let go of all the random energy of the world to focus on bringing harmony and peace into your life. You might want to set up an alter to help focalize your meditation, contemplation or prayer, It can include a candle, flowers, objects of nature, sacred pictures, or anything that inspires your spirit. And if peaceful music is playing in the background (or on headphones), it will help ground and center your soul in the spirit of peace.

Healing Sanctuary was created after 911 to provide a shelter from the storms of life. In this calm haven, deeply soothing music of flutes, harps and natural sounds create healing relief, even in the midst of personal and planetary turmoil. In this place of serenity one can begin the process of self-restoration and finding inner peace. The music is dedicated to all who have suffered at the hand of violence.

Continue reading Creating a Personal Sanctuary for Spiritual Rejuvenation Benefits You and Your World

Dream Space by Dean Evenson Now Available!

Soundings of the Planet announces the release of co-founder Dean Evenson’s latest album Dream Space. In his long and illustrious career spanning three decades, Evenson has made many albums in support of his mission of Peace Through Music. His music is very popular with massage therapists and body workers as well as yoga teachers and anyone needing to relax. In a time when stress is rampant, this album promises to please his fan base and add to it. The music reflects the title – very dreamy with a sense of vast space and rich low tones that make it perfect for healing, meditation and even sleep. Since 1979, Dean Evenson has shared his special brand of award-winning, relaxation music. Now he takes the listener to an even deeper state of inner peace.

For Dream Space, Evenson plays sonorous flutes even slower than usual and in addition to his soprano silver flute, he adds the deep tones of bass and alto flutes over a well-crafted bed of atmospheric keyboards. He is joined by his wife, Dudley Evenson, on harp, tamboura and Tibetan bowls. His long time co-producer and Soundings engineer, Phil Heaven, adds his beautiful viola stylings to round out the musical experience.

Dream Space contains within the mix the natural Earth Resonance Frequency (ERF) of the planet. This sub-audio tone at 7.83 hertz (cycles per second) helps to enhance Alpha/Theta brainwave synchronization for deeper relaxation. Dean Evenson’s healing music has the added value of including the Earth Resonance Frequency which is in the range of the naturalvibration of the earth’s atmospheric cavity and can be felt but not heard. Under the influence of this original nurturing earth frequency, the brain will entrain into the state that is on the cusp between Alpha and Theta and occurs when a person is still awake and alert, yet in a calm and meditative space. Studies have shown that the effect of this frequency on the nervous system is significant and when one is in the presence of the ERF, a person calms down to the peaceful Alpha/Theta state. The ERF added to this very peaceful music makes Dream Space a perfect support for the healing process.

Release Date: March 12. 2013. Help us gain more visibility for this wonderful release by ordering on amazon now. And if you would like to write a review on amazon, that would be gratefully appreciated.

Love Shows the Way: We Are Here to Serve

We are living in a time of great change. Many thinkers and seers agree that humanity and planet Earth are evolving at a quickened pace, and that this evolution will necessarily be severe and seemingly chaotic at times. It is natural for people to react with fear, because these changes will doubtless bring some level of difficulty and loss to many. However, it is essential that we all remember that our souls chose to be here at this time and to be part of this process. Every movement in the universe is one toward love. This is true even in situations that appear on the surface to be the opposite of loving.

Since we chose to be here, we are ready and able to rise to the challenges in which we find ourselves. It is helpful to reflect on our own lives and make any changes necessary to fully support humanity and the planet. When we open our hearts in love instead of closing them in fear, we serve the divine process. We are all powerful spirits who took form at this time in order to serve our fellow humans, our planet, and the universe. As we find ways we can serve, our fear dissipates. We may serve by remaining calm and loving with our children and our families, even as the situation seems dark; by sending money to people who need financial assistance; or by going out into the world and actively helping others rebuild their lives. Regardless of what actions we choose to take, the essential element will be the internal gesture of choosing to remain in love. This is all that is needed.

When it is difficult to remain in love, we may always call upon our unseen helpers: the teachers and guides who are always with us. All we need to do is ask, and then trust that we are being helped. The guidance we receive is love itself, showing us the way.

Excerpt from ‘DailyOM, Learning to Live’ by Madisyn Taylor, DailyOm.com

The picture here is of our neighbor Jerry who had a bad chain saw accident, almost lost his arm, and was cared for by his neighbors who raised money and gave of their time to build him a house to replace his that had been damaged by fire. This story inspired our whole community with its message of ‘Love Thy Neighbor.’ (click here for story on Jerry and his neighbors) May all communities find ways to help their neighbors in need.

The Blessing of Friends

FRIENDSHIP I am grateful for the blessing of friends

Whether we have one friend or many, we treasure that connection with other humans. We also appreciate and enjoy the friendship of animals. As we learn to be a good friend and reach out to others in a giving spirit, we will find that the depth of our associations increases and we will attract more quality relationships into our lives. Instead of dwelling on loneliness or lack, we can decide to reach out and share the gift of who we are with others who may need a friend. As we learn to give more of ourselves, we will find that people notice and appreciate us and are more likely invite us into their lives. Let us also remember how we like to be treated and treat our friends in loving and thoughtful ways as well.

(Soundings team and neighbors pictured L-R Serene Stevenson long time friend, Phil Heaven Soundings engineer, violist and Chief Everything officer, his lovely wife Toby Heaven owner of Sandalwood Salon & Spa, Bob Paltrow Soundings graphic designer and webmaster, Dean Evenson Soundings main man, flautist and co-founder)

I honor and respect the friends I have. I appreciate the support that good friendship brings. I reach out to others in friendship and in turn, receive their blessings. If I find myself alone or feeling lonely, I don’t think about my own situation, but instead try to reach out to someone else who needs support. In the process of becoming a better friend to others, I find that people treat me in a more friendly way. I extend myself in friendship to all sorts of people, young and old, near and far, familiar and unfamiliar. I am surrounded by loving people in a very friendly world. I feel safe and supported.

Hear this affirmation spoken or view the video with nature images and music.
A New Day, A New Year, A New You!

A great way to begin the year with 52 weekly affirmations.

A NEW DAY

I let go of the old and open myself to the new Often, we tend to cling to old patterns and habits that may be holding us back. It is these attachments that can keep us from living fully. In this centering affirmation, we allow ourselves to open up to the many blessings that exist within the vast sea of infinite possibilities surrounding us. When so-called negative experiences present themselves, we frequently tighten up and form an armor of resistance around us, thereby closing ourselves off from the magic inherent in the unknown. By always being open to new possibilities, we allow the Universe to harness all its forces to help us in the best ways possible. This affirmation is a wonderful way to begin our year of weekly wisdom meditations.

Say this affirmation to yourself: I sit quietly and center myself, breathing deeply and fully. I feel myself firmly connected to the earth as I let the spirit flow through me. I let go of busyness and of anything that may be overwhelming me. I open myself to the new, to new possibilities, to a new day, and to the fresh new cells being constantly created in my body with every breath I take. I feel the refreshing inspiration of new opportunities coming my way. I welcome this new and wonderful time in my life and see it filled with goodness, creativity and peace. I let go of the old and allow the new to come gently into my life.

Hear this affirmation spoken or view the video with nature images and music.
