Desert Dawn Song 35th Anniversary Edition

Desert Dawn SongThere is something quite magical about the sounds of dawn in the desert.  For this recording, Dean Evenson spent the night in a desert canyon near Tucson, Arizona.  Just before dawn, he placed out two microphones for a stereo recording of the joyous birdsong.  The natural sounds then formed the inspiration for the music.

Desert Dawn Song was one of the very first recordings using natural sounds combined with peaceful music.  Dudley Evenson’s haunting vocals and harp merge with the dawn bird calls. Dean, a classically trained flutist and Jonathan Kramer, a classically trained cellist composed their music as it was being played, blending classical structures with jazz improvisations and in the process created a completely new form of music.

The Evensons wanted to share the wisdom they were learning from Native Americans about the Earth as a living being and including the natural sounds with the music was a way they could honor the Earth. Their vision was for the music to carry the message of nature to people in cities who made decisions affecting the fate of the planet.

This early album launched a whole new genre of music now known as New Age, Healing, Relaxation, or Nature Music.  Massage therapists were the first to discover that this music could enhance their healing practice. In the early days, Dean and Dudley sold their tapes at swap meets and very soon received feedback about the healing effects of their music. Then letters poured in and they realized that the nature-based music they were creating was having a healing effect on people.  The rest is history!

How to Use Toning & Breath for Meditation

Vocal toning is not an esoteric practice or exotic form of sound healing, but it is in fact a natural form of expression that may occur throughout our day whether we are aware of it or not.  When we stub our toe we may emit a loud groan as we moan owww.  Or perhaps we are finally able to relax after a busy day and we let out a sigh of relief sounding a long tone of ahhh.  We may hum a tune under our breath and feel the deep resonance of that hum.  Or we may laugh out loud with a big ho ho or ha ha.  All these sounds are indeed aspects of toning.

Yet beyond these spontaneous natural vocal tones, we can also use toning consciously to bring more energy into our own bodies or to enhance our meditation practice.  This can work by allowing the tone to put the breaks on our breath and slow down our exhalation which also helps slow down our mental thought process.

You can follow these simple steps to deepen your meditation using toning:
• Breathe in quickly and fully
• Hold your breath for a few moments
• Then exhale slowly and completely letting a sound accompany your exhale
• The sound can be a vowel tone or ohh or ahh
• When the exhale is complete, repeat the process

Be aware of your diaphragm, which is located just below your belly button.  This is the powerful muscle that causes your lungs to contract and expand acting like a bellows.  Relax into the rhythm of your breathing.  As you become comfortable with the process of expressing yourself vocally through toning, you will be able to deepen your meditative experience and reach a more peaceful state of being.

Chakra Meditations & TonesCheck out our album Chakra Meditations & Tones which includes affirmations on each of the chakras and vocal toning for each chakra that you can tone along with.  Toning is a fun, participatory practice that can bring a sense of rejuvenation and vitality.  The good news is toning can be done by anyone and requires no prior musical training.

Dudley Evenson taught a workshop called ‘Toning Up, Tuning In – Chakras & more’ at the 4th International Globe Sound Healing Conference, Oakland, California.  It was an amazing gathering of sound healers.  Sound healing benefits are limitless and the presenters in this conference had a lot to share.

Peace Through Music Supports Wounded Warriors

by Dudley Evenson
WalterReedGrpInspite of our life long aversion to war, my husband, Dean Evenson and I have found a way we can “support the troops” while still remaining true to our core values.  Since so many people coming back from battle are suffering from extreme physical and emotional wounds, we were looking for a way to really put our Peace Through Music mission to work.  Since 1979, we have been producing music for healing and yoga and the popularity of our music with healthcare practitioners and everyday people made us realize it could possibly be of benefit to soldiers returning from combat and suffering from PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder).

We decided to reach out to Walter Reed Army Medical Center, often the first stateside landing hospital for wounded soldiers returning from war.  When we contacted the head chaplain there, Major John Kallerson, we found that he had already used some of Dean Evenson’s CDs in his own healing.  Once he realized that he had personally experienced the benefits of Dean’s music, he was enthusiastic about making it available for his patients and began to include it in the Wounded Warrior Kit given out at the hospital.

Chaplain Kallerson told us “The music helps our patients focus on their healing and not the chronic pain they endure constantly. The soothing music of Healing Sanctuary and Healing Dreams provides a needed respite from the dreams and flashbacks of the terrors that our wounded have seen and experienced.  It is helpful for them to relax and not dwell on the bad dreams or images that they can see… Some find them very helpful to get to sleep.”

Inspired by this feedback, we began to research the effects of war and the stress disorders that often plague veterans of violent conflict and learned that music can offer an antidote to some of the emotional traumas experienced.  We put together a Relaxation Basic Training Guide to help returning soldiers in their healing process.  Couched in military terms, the booklet presented concepts of Nada Yoga or the Yoga of Sound and shared many techniques that are actually ancient yogic practices incorporating breath, muscle relaxation, meditation and mantra.

During two separate visits, we performed our peaceful music of flute and harp interspersed with teachings about relaxation and sound healing.  Looking back on the content of our offering to these wounded troops and medical professionals, we realized we were actually sharing the basics of yoga and meditation.  Although we didn’t demonstrate any postures, the foundation of the information we offered was yoga.  From breathing demonstrations to relaxation to affirmations and mantra, we were able to educate these service people about this ancient practice.  Hopefully our story will inspire people to reach out in their own communities to offer yoga, music, massage and other healing modalities to veterans who are in such desperate need of healing.  The benefit is for the veterans, their families, and the community at large.  It’s never too late to plant seeds of peace.

Have you heard about children with Nature Deficit Disorder?

Look deep into nature, and then you will understand everything better.”  ~ Albert Einstein

4 kids in tree
April is here, the month of spring emerging and anticipation of the resurrection of all of nature.  It’s also the time that many of us acknowledge and celebrate Earth Day. But did you know that today, an unprecedented majority of children in modern societies have what is being called ‘Nature Deficit Disorder?’  That wouldn’t apply to the kids sitting in the tree pictured here though, but according to a report on BBC about a three-year study done in Britain, only one-fifth of the children aged 8-12 were ‘connected to nature.’  That means four-fifths or a staggering 80% of children have little or no connection with nature.

Why should this matter?  In recent years, a lot of research has focused on the negative effects that result from lack of contact with nature.  In 2012, Britain’s National Trust published a report on the phenomenon of ‘nature deficit disorder.’   Though it is not yet recognized as a medical condition, this lack of connection with nature can have harmful, long lasting effects on children of all ages.  With the pervasive use of technology by younger and younger children, the growth of virtual, as opposed to reality-based play is having a profound effect on children’s physical and emotional lives. Mental health disorders including depression and self-harming can often be a result of this nature disconnect.

According to Sue Armstrong-Brown, head of RSPB, Britain’s largest nature conservation charity, “improving the natural connection for children is not only good for the youngsters, it is crucial for the future of nature conservation.  If we can grow a generation of children that have a connection to nature and do feel a sense of oneness with it, we then have the force for the future that can save nature and stop us living in a world where nature is declining.”

Dean video pink flowersBecause of their deep love and concern for the natural world, Dudley and Dean Evenson have dedicated their life and work to elevating awareness and appreciation for the earth, our planet, our only home.  They remember the very first Earth Day back in 1970. And in 1972, with Dudley being five months pregnant, they back-packed across Sweden to the first United Nations Conference on the Human Environment.  There they met Native Americans who were talking about Mother Earth and saying that the planet itself is an actual living being providing for all our physical needs and we are destroying her.  The Evensons were just beginning to work with the early portable video camera so they were able to document their experience in Stockholm and all that they were learning.  These videos and others ended up in a DVD released recently called ‘2 U.N. Earth Summits: 1972 & 1992’ of their experiences in Stockholm and later in Rio de Janeiro.

Then in 1979, Soundings of the Planet was formed to be a voice of the earth.  Dean had recorded the sounds of dawn in the Arizona desert and added their peaceful music of flute and harp and a whole new genre of music was born.  For over three decades, Dean and Dudley have produced CDs and DVDs that focus on peaceful, natural environments.  In celebration of Earth Day, Soundings of the Planet is offering super discounts on all Soundings albums that include natural sounds including our new 4 Earth CD and 4 Earth DVD of only natural sounds.  Please share with your children, grandchildren, or just enjoy them yourself.

The first half hour of the album is spoken by Dudley Evenson, whose soothing voice leads the guided affirmations for each chakra – concluding with a track for balancing all the chakras.  The second half hour is comprised of musical toning with the chakras and features Beth Quist whose beautiful vocalizations of the chakras reflect the essence of each energy center.

For more than three decades, Dudley and Dean Evenson have immersed themselves in the exploration of healing through music.  They have traveled to temples, interviewed healers and worked with masterful musicians around the world.  On this progressive path, they have developed an understanding of the multi-dimensional uses of music.  Their album “Chakra Meditations & Tones” reveals the basic steps of healing through sound on a journey through your chakras, body, spirit and mind.

These award-winning sound healing pioneers have created this beautiful album as an effective tool for energizing and balancing the chakras. The album is designed to be listened to frequently and is arranged so that one can add their own tones to the sound track. It is ideal for meditation, healing, yoga and overall relaxation.  Liner notes explain the chakra system.

The Hindustani Scale (Sa Re Ga ma Pa Dha Ni Sa) and the Sanskrit Seed Sounds of Bija mantra (Lam Vam Ram Yam Ham Sham Aum) are used along with the vowel tones (UH, OO, OH, AH, EYE, AYE, EEE) to evoke deep inner peace and set the ground for the rhythms and tones of this mind calming, meditative, body healing, musical album.

Mindful Revolution Reaches Mainstream

Time MindfulWe picked up a copy of Time Magazine recently because of this awesome cover article on mindfulness.  It is satisfying to learn that what we have been working on for over four decades has reached the mainstream with cover stories such as this.  The article talks about how technology and our many devices have fractured our attention to such an extent that we are never able to give our full attention to any one thing.  Fortunately, through a practice of mindfulness and meditation, we can learn to focus and use various techniques to quiet our busy minds and become more aware of the present moment.

Since Dean and I first began meditating in the early 70s, we have seen the benefits that such a practice can bring to our daily lives.  We have also learned that the peaceful music we create can also help the process of centering and calming the mind and body and help bring about a deeper sense of inner peace.

The good news is that these same mental training techniques are used by people in all walks of life from Silicon Valley entrepreneurs, Fortune 500 titans and soccer moms to students wanting to enhance their learning and people dealing with health issues.  One technique discussed in the article is called Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) and was developed in 1979 (the same year we founded Soundings of the Planet) by Jon Kabat-Zinn, an MIT educated scientist with a PhD. degree in Molecular Biology (like Dean Evenson’s Masters in Molecular Biology).  We have had the privilege of meeting Jon many times at the various mind-body conferences. He is also the son-in-law of author and social activist, Howard Zinn, but that’s another story. In fact, Jon and his wife Myla told us that every morning they wake up listening to us on their alarm clock which is set to play Soundings of the Planet’s music.   Now that’s a good way to begin the day with Peace Through Music!

If you are interested in using music to support your meditation and mindfulness practice or simply to reduce stress in your life, here is some of our music that is good for meditation.
