Need for Stillness Greater Now Than Ever

We are pleased to announce STILLNESS, Dean Evenson’s latest album. Official release date is November 18. Preorder on amazon.com. Digital downloads available now on iTunes. Dean’s long, slow keyboard tones and rich atmospheric arrangements blend with the pure sounds of his silver flute and the deep bass flute of Doug Tessler. This deeply soothing music connects with the still, quiet place within creating the perfect mood for meditation and going deep.

We realize it has been a challenging time for many people and emotions are running high and deep. Dealing with grief and loss calls for us to lean in on the tools we know work. Any time we are confronted with situations not to our liking, we are reminded that clearing the mind and letting go of attachment to our position can be a tremendous help. This principle works both ways and applies even if we are ecstatically happy about something.

For some peace of mind, join Dean Evenson as he plays his flute and meditates by mountain lakes

Meditation can support us in letting go of negative emotions such as anger and sadness and make way for a more compassionate, joyful and expansive state of being. We can’t always control what goes on around us but we can learn to control how we react to and internalize what happens in our outer world. Meditation can have immense benefits for our spiritual and physical wellbeing. Through listening to calming music and a regular meditation practice, we strive to reach a state of inner peace and move ourselves much closer to the realization our divine nature.

Michael McGillicuddy, Owner Central Florida School of Massage Therapy, had this to say about Stillness: “I love Dean Evenson’s new Stillness album. It is like listening to soft waves of flute while laying in a peaceful place. Very relaxing, peaceful and perfect for massage and other healing modalities. I received an acupuncture treatment today and listening to the CD was very healing to me.”

We invite you to check out our free download this week to listen to a track from Stillness.

And we love to hear from you. How do you deal with challenges when they come up, whether personal or societal? We always like to know what tools and techniques others have to get through difficult times. When you comment here, we’ll send you a free download in appreciation.

Deobrat Mishra Indian Sitar Master Tours Northwest

Since the very beginning of Soundings of the Planet in 1979, Dudley and Dean Evenson have been privileged to collaborate with outstanding musicians from around the world. Recently, Dean has enjoyed recording and performing with 11th generation Indian sitar masters – Deobrat Mishra and Pt. Shivnath Mishra. Their popular album on the Soundings label, RAGA CYCLE, is a blend of ancient ragas and modern interpretations.

This fall, Deobrat Mishra is touring in the Pacific Northwest and Soundings is pleased to sponsor his Evening Ragas Sitar Concert in Bellingham. His concert tour is a benefit for the Benares Music Academy and the Daya Foundation which empowers people through yoga, two very relevant organizations.

Deobrat Mishra brings his energetic and innovative playing style back to Pacific Northwest. He is one of the most creative and innovative sitar artists in India. He was taught by his father, Pt. Shivnath Mishra, who had him performing on stage when he was five years old. The father-son duo has toured extensively in India, Europe and the Pacific Northwest to sell out crowds and more recently, Deobrat is traveling solo with a tabla player. Dean Evenson will join him on flute in Bellingham.

The Benares Academy of Indian Classical Music provides musical training and home for students ranging from the community of ‘untouchables’ in India, children of impoverished musicians who can’t afford to pass their traditions along, as well as to international travelers. Students have the opportunity to study music that engages the brain, heart, body, and mind toward integration, optimism, and service. Classical Indian music instruction is offered by scholarships made possible by these events.

DAYA Foundation is a change-agent organization based in Portland, Oregon that empowers students to discover their essential life skills through the yoga. Students are from diverse populations, including those isolated by trauma, incarceration, residential treatment centers, or with mental or physical health challenges. Peaceful Music Helps PTSD

Soon after the recent wars began, Dean Evenson and I became aware of the impacts that wartime trauma was having on combatants. We heard from a psychologist friend about PTSD and terrible physical and mental conditions returning soldiers were dealing with. We learned in disturbing detail about the challenges they were facing and we wanted to help. We wondered if our peaceful music could be supportive in calming the mental demons facing veterans of wars and other traumatic events.

PTSD and Visit to Walter Reed

We reached out to Walter Reed Military Medical Center where many wounded warriors were hospitalized dealing with PTSD and physical wounds. We discovered that the chief chaplain there already knew Dean Evenson’s music and had used it in his own healing. He invited us to visit Walter Reed.  There we offered workshops on how to use music to help the healing, both mental and physical.  Since then, we have continued the process of getting our relaxation music and DVDs to hospitals, vet centers and individuals. We also created a simple but informative RELAXATION BASIC TRAINING GUIDE that offered tools of how to use music to support the healing process for those with PTSD.

Peace Through Music

Soundings of the Planet’s motto is Peace Through Music.  We are peace-oriented musicians who have been creating nature-based recordings for over 35 years.  Our relaxation and world music is heard in spas, salons, yoga and healing centers around the world. Now we are glad that it is being used by veterans to help their healing process.

“As the wounded soldiers and marines arrive every week at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, it is nice to have your music as part of our care plan to meet their need to relax and rest while they recuperate from their injuries.  The music also helps our patients focus on their healing and not the chronic pain they endure constantly. The soothing music of Healing Sanctuary and Healing Dreams provides a needed respite from the dreams and flashbacks of the terrors that our wounded have seen and experienced.  It is helpful for them to relax and not dwell on the bad dreams or images that they can see… Some find them very helpful to get to sleep.”

Dean Evenson Explains the Earth Resonancy Frequency

Ever since he discovered information about the Earth Resonance Frequency (ERF), Dean Evenson has included that sub-audio tone under the mix in his healing music albums. We’ve had lots of requests for more information so here is some background on why it is such an important frequency and why we use it.

Our physical body is affected by vibrations that are below the range of hearing. One ‘ultra low frequency’ is called the Earth Resonance Frequency (ERF). This common frequency of our beautiful planet is located primarily at 7.83 Hertz or cycles per second.  One reason we are interested in this frequency is because it is very similar to the frequency our brains emit when we are in the Alpha brainwave state. There are several factors at play here and we will share our understanding of the scientific basis of resonant frequency and explain how that ties in with the state of our consciousness. We will also describe how the ERF or other ultra low frequencies can be used in music to support reaching a meditative or healing zone more easily.

It may be more than coincidence the Earth Resonance Frequency of 7.83 Hz is similar to the frequency our brains emit when we are in the state of consciousness right on the cusp between the Alpha and Theta brainwave states. As you may know, our brains emit ultra low frequency sound waves that vary depending on the state of our consciousness. When we are in our busy, rational frame of mind, our brains emit Beta frequencies in the range of 14-20 Hz. This is called our Beta brainwave state and occurs when we are active and thinking, doing computer work, driving a car, or something that requires left brain thinking. We need to access this state to function in the world on a daily basis.

When we are seeking a space to meditate or heal, we want to drop down into the next state which is deeper and more relaxed, so we enter the Alpha state. This is when we are awake and alert but very peaceful, calm and centered. The Alpha range is around 7-14 Hz. and is a very safe state to be in because one is still awake and alert to the surroundings but also open and receptive to being at peace and accessing our more intuitive faculties.

Peace On Earth. Peace Through Music!

Peace Through Music blessings from the Soundings of the Planet team
(l to r Brett Steelhammer, Dean Evenson, Dudley Evenson, Alycia Willson, Phil Heaven)

We at Soundings of the Planet send you the blessings of Peace Through Music this season and every day. We firmly believe peace is possible in our daily lives in spite of what mainstream news wants us to believe. We live by the principle – ‘What you focus on expands’ – and we choose to focus on the goodness inherent in every person, the bounty and abundance of the Earth, and the knowledge that peace is a goal worth striving for.

We realize it’s been quite a year and we aren’t living in a cave without awareness of the tragedies that exist in our world. We do know that each one of us has the opportunity to make a positive difference in our family, our community and our world and so we move forward with hope and gratitude for the gifts we do have. We all have our ups and downs but we deal with what comes, keeping a positive attitude and doing what needs to be done.  Peace Through Music has been our mission since we founded Soundings of the Planet over 35 years ago and it continues to this day. We hope that our offerings are a benefit to you and your family or if you are a massage therapist or healing arts professional – to you and your clients. Or if you are a teacher – to you and your students. Or if you are a parent – to you and your kids. You get the gist! Continue reading Peace On Earth. Peace Through Music!

The Healing Power of Music

AARP Healing MusicIt’s wonderful when big organizations like AARP are communicating to their 37 million members about the healing power of music. This is what Dean Evenson and I have been talking about and teaching for over three decades and it feels like the ‘mainstream’ is finally catching up. An article in the recent AARP Bulletin shares advances in helping Alzheimer’s patients by using music and the results are amazing. In his book Musicophilia, neurologist, Oliver Sacks, states that music can be very much like medicine for Alzheimer’s patients. “Music in no luxury to them, but a necessity, and it can have a power beyond anything else to restore them to themselves, and to others, at least for a while.”

In a study at George Mason University, Jane Flinn, a behavioral neuroscientist along with graduate student, Linda Maguire, tested a group of patients with various forms of dementia who regularly sang familiar songs like ‘Somewhere Over the Rainbow’ and ‘Isn’t It Romantic.’ In observing them over four months, the researchers discovered that the mental acuity of those who regularly sang went up considerably. With the ineffectiveness of many pharmaceutical drugs to deal with dementia, it is exciting to witness the benefits of alternative approaches.

A group in Minneapolis even formed a choir of people living with Alzheimer’s and other brain diseases and their caregivers. Since people with these diseases have difficulty navigating through many phases of their lives, being able to laugh and be joyful through singing can lift the spirit and improve connectivity and engagement.

Some of you may have seen the recent film called Alive Inside: A Story of Music and Memory. Or maybe you were one of the 11 million people who watched the clip from the movie that went viral on YouTube. It showed an Alzheimer’s patient named Henry who was reawakened listening to a favorite song by Cab Calloway, clearly showing the power of sound to reconnect the neural pathways of memory.

Dan Cohen, founded Music and Memory initially to provide iPods with personalized music for elderly patients in nursing homes. He started by donating 200 iPods and now the program has expanded to hundreds of facilities throughout the country. One of the states that has picked up the ball and is running with it is Wisconsin where two-thirds of the state’s nursing homes use personalized playlists of music as part of daily caregiving routines. Here’s a statement by Deb Jacoby of the Rocky Knoll Health Care Center that attests to the benefits of personalized music for patients ~ “iPods are making a huge impact here in Wisconsin. I have about 30 iPods in use at this time. Families are excited about how some of their loved ones are more engaged in conversation, in better moods, and actually awake and more engaged throughout the day.”

So the blessings of finding Peace Through Music continue. We are glad to be part of this important movement and look forward to learning how we can contribute more to the healing of people and the planet. Visit us at soundings.com to learn about the part of the universe we are playing in.

If you are interested in learning more about the healing power of music you might want to check out our DailyOM online course called EXPERIENCE MUSIC AS MEDICINE. It’s practically free (you just pay what you want to or can afford). Also available as a ten DVD set called SONIC HEALING: MEET THE MASTERS VIDEO COURSE. A bit more expensive but then you have the videos and they include Public Performance Rights so you can show them in public.

Desert Dawn Song 35th Anniversary Edition

Desert Dawn SongThere is something quite magical about the sounds of dawn in the desert.  For this recording, Dean Evenson spent the night in a desert canyon near Tucson, Arizona.  Just before dawn, he placed out two microphones for a stereo recording of the joyous birdsong.  The natural sounds then formed the inspiration for the music.

Desert Dawn Song was one of the very first recordings using natural sounds combined with peaceful music.  Dudley Evenson’s haunting vocals and harp merge with the dawn bird calls. Dean, a classically trained flutist and Jonathan Kramer, a classically trained cellist composed their music as it was being played, blending classical structures with jazz improvisations and in the process created a completely new form of music.

The Evensons wanted to share the wisdom they were learning from Native Americans about the Earth as a living being and including the natural sounds with the music was a way they could honor the Earth. Their vision was for the music to carry the message of nature to people in cities who made decisions affecting the fate of the planet.

This early album launched a whole new genre of music now known as New Age, Healing, Relaxation, or Nature Music.  Massage therapists were the first to discover that this music could enhance their healing practice. In the early days, Dean and Dudley sold their tapes at swap meets and very soon received feedback about the healing effects of their music. Then letters poured in and they realized that the nature-based music they were creating was having a healing effect on people.  The rest is history!
