As Mother’s Day approaches, we want to honor all mothers everywhere. Mothers come in all shapes, sizes and temperaments. Different cultures have different patterns of mothering. Mothers have different challenges and issues depending on their circumstances. Whether mothers have ‘First World Problems’ or ‘Third World’ Problems,’ they all need support and love from their family and community.
If our mother was loving and caring, we can be inspired by her love. If our mother had a pack of problems and didn’t know how to love us, we can be inspired by what she wasn’t and strive to be a better person ourselves. We can learn from whatever situation we are given. No matter how our mother did or didn’t give us the love we wanted, we can choose to love her. If our mother is no longer living, we can still give love to her. If we have unfinished business with our mom, we can do our best to forgive her and move on.
Mothering is a very complex and challenging process and I might add – one of the most important ‘jobs’ a woman can ever do. As a mother, we strive to do our best based on our background and awareness, but often it seems like we can’t do anything right, especially according to our teenage kids. So during this week of remembering and honoring mothers, let’s remember to reach out to our own mother if she is living and to all the mothers in our world and let them know how much they are appreciated.

GRATITUDE. I am grateful for all without conditions.
So often we wait to have what we want before feeling thankful. In this case, we may be waiting a long time. To jump-start the flow of blessings in our life, we practice gratitude at all times, even for the things that might appear negative. When we can be truly grateful for everything that happens, the good or the bad, we will find that our lives gradually improve. It may be challenging at first to find the silver lining in every situation, but once this habit of gratitude becomes a part of us, we will be pleasantly surprised by what opens up for us. We can begin by expressing appreciation for the basics like food and shelter and for small things that we can easily acknowledge. From there, we can allow our gratitude to grow and when it does, we shall be ready for even better things to come our way. Continue reading Gratitude for All and Sharing our Gifts
A primordial clear light mind
Is something that we all have within us.
It is not something external to us.
It is on this basis that we can attain enlightenment
When we can see, straightforwardly and non-conceptually,
the nature of our clear light mind
and remain totally absorbed on this nature
without ever regressing from it we have become a Buddha
– The Gelug/Lagyu tradition of Mahamudra
What is this Pure Light Mind that the scripture above speaks of? Is this something attainable by us mortals or only available to the realm of the Buddha and the Christ? Modern scientists recognize that our DNA emits light in the form of photons. So even on the physical level, it is understood that we are made up of light. Fortunately, many people across the ages have been able to access this aspect of their divine mind though their steadfast practice of meditation. So, although it may take some time and of course personal discipline, there are tools that can help you in your own quest. The goal of our meditation should be to move us closer to seeing clearly the nature of our mind which is ultimately pure light. Through meditation, we can hope to remove the impediments to this light by letting go of that which causes our suffering – clouds of worry, fear, anger, hatred, envy, craving and self-doubt. As we let go of these negative emotions, we make way for a more compassionate, joyful and expansive state of being. Through a regular meditation practice, we can expect to reach a state of inner peace and move that much closer to the realization our divine self.
Do you have trouble clearing your mind of worrisome or busy thoughts? Fortunately music has been found to help the process. Here are some of Soundings of the Planet’s meditation albums.
